In the beginning . . .

What is Human Design and where did it come from?

In a world full of systems that try to tell us who we should be, Human Design offers something different: a map that reminds us who we already are. Born from a mystical experience in 1987 and blending ancient wisdom with cutting-edge science, Human Design is a powerful tool to help us gain self-understanding and to start deconditioning.

In this blog, I explore how the system came to be, the unlikely story of its founder Ra Uru Hu and the fascinating fusion of astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah, the chakra system, quantum physics and genetics that make it such a profound tool for transformation.

The Human Design System: A Map of You,
Written in the Language of the Stars and the Cells

In the winter of 1987, on the island of Ibiza, a man named Ra Uru Hu—formerly Robert Allan Krakower—experienced what he later described as a “mystical encounter” with a voice. For eight days and nights, he said he was “downloaded” with a vast system of knowledge—a synthesis that would later be called the Human Design System. It wasn’t a theory he researched or a belief he cultivated. It came all at once, fully formed, through what he referred to as the “Voice.”

At its heart, the Human Design System is a blueprint of how your energy operates. It reveals how you are wired to make decisions, interact with others, process life and navigate the world. But what makes it so unique is the extraordinary fusion of ancient systems and modern science—astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, the chakra system, quantum physics and even genetics—woven together into a single, elegant map of the self.

Human Design is not a philosophy. It doesn’t ask you to believe. It just asks you to experiment.

Let’s trace the lineage of this layered system and how it came about.

"Don't believe a word I say, try it." Ra Uru Hu.

A Synthesis of Ancient Wisdom

Human Design draws on the insight and symbology of

four great esoteric systems:

Western Astrology

Astrology is one of the oldest systems for understanding human nature through

planetary influence. In Human Design, your birth time and place are used to

calculate two sets of planetary positions: one for the moment of your birth and

another approximately 88 days prior. This is called your “Design” and “Personality”

— the unconscious and conscious sides of your chart.

These planetary imprints determine the gates and channels activated in your

unique BodyGraph.

The I Ching

At the core of Human Design are the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, the ancient

Chinese Book of Changes. Each hexagram represents a pattern of energy or

archetype. In Human Design, these 64 archetypes correspond to the 64 gates

on the BodyGraph—and to the 64 codons of human DNA, tying ancient wisdom

directly to genetics. This is where the language of energetic potential meets the

raw code of life.

The Kabbalistic Tree of Life

The mystical Kabbalah’s Tree of Life is a map of divine emanations—how spirit

moves through form. In Human Design, we see echoes of this map in the BodyGraph,

where energy flows between centres via defined channels, similar to how energy

moves through the sephirot in Kabbalah. It is a structure of integration, tracing the

path of consciousness through the body.

The Hindu-Brahmin Chakra System

Human Design adapts the seven chakras into nine centres—acknowledging that

we have evolved beyond the older seven-centre system. These nine centres in the

BodyGraph each govern different aspects of human experience: from thinking and

identity, to emotions, communication and drive. Some of your centres will be defined

(fixed and reliable), and others open (fluid and influenced by others). This mix is part

of what makes your design uniquely you. There’s a theory that humanity is on the

brink of an evolutionary leap—set to become 11-centred beings by 2027. But that’s

a story for another time…

Grounding it in Science:

Quantum Physics, Neutrinos & Genetics

While Human Design honours these ancient systems, it is deeply rooted in the science of the modern world.

Neutrinos and Quantum Physics

Central to Human Design is the idea that we are constantly being bathed in

streams of information from the cosmos—through neutrinos. Neutrinos are

subatomic particles that pass through everything—your body, the Earth,

even concrete walls. For years, they were thought to be massless, but it’s

now understood they do carry a tiny amount of mass. This means they can

influence matter—and, according to Human Design, they do.

The idea is that neutrinos carry data from the stars—planetary information encoded

in particles—and imprint us at the moment of birth, leaving a trace in our energetic

structure. This is the scientific underpinning of why your birth time matters so much

in Human Design.

Genetics and Ancestral Patterns

The 64 gates in your chart align perfectly with the 64 codons in our genetic code.

It’s not metaphorical. Human Design proposes a direct relationship between our

energetic imprint and the physical DNA we inherit. Each gate is like a genetic key—

unlocking potentials, challenges and themes that travel down family lines.

What we see in a chart is not just personality—it’s a story. Some of that story is yours

and some of it has been passed to you. The openness in your chart can also reveal

where you absorb ancestral patterns and conditioning—where you might carry things

that were never yours to begin with.

The Role of the

BodyGraph

The BodyGraph is the visual expression of your design.

It’s a diagram that maps the flow of energy through nine centres,

linked by 36channels and 64 gates. Your chart shows where energy is

consistent and where it is variable. It tells you where to trust your own inner

authority and how to make decisions without relying on the mind.

In a world obsessed with the intellect, Human Design asks us to stop thinking

our way through life and instead tune into the intelligence of the body.

Why Ra Uru Hu?

Many have questioned: why him? Why did this complex, layered system come through Ra? In his own words, Ra described himself as “reluctant.” He was not seeking this knowledge. But after the encounter, he spent years decoding what he had received, testing it and sharing it. He called himself a “messenger,” not a guru and insisted that the system speak for itself.

What he offered was an experiment: live by your strategy and authority and see what happens.

Human Design as a Tool for Deconditioning

Perhaps one of Human Design’s greatest gifts is that it offers us a way back to

ourselves.

From the moment we’re born, we’re conditioned—by family, culture, schooling,

social media and even our own thoughts—to be someone else. To fit in.

To achieve. To be good, productive, or normal. Human Design doesn’t tell you

who to be. It holds up a mirror and says: This is how you were designed to move through the world before the world told you otherwise.

By living in alignment with our design, we begin the slow process of deconditioning. Of shedding what isn’t ours and reclaiming what is.

An Invitation to Experiment

Human Design is not a religion. It’s not a belief system. It is a tool. A map. A permission slip to honour how you naturally operate. It can be wildly accurate, unsettlingly precise and deeply affirming. But it doesn’t matter what it says—what matters is how it feels when you live it.

So, begin the experiment. Notice how your energy responds. Honour your own rhythm. Let your body be the compass. And trust that the stars, your DNA and your ancestors are not separate—they’re all speaking through you.

After all, the design is already living in you. Human Design simply gives it language.
